Medicare Insurance for Florida Residents

What is Medicare?

For many Florida residents, approaching 65 years old means retirement and transitioning into a new phase in their lives. This means thinking about what type of health care they will need during their golden years. For this segment of Florida’s population, Medicare is an available option. It is the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older.

When Can I Get Medicare?

Medicare benefits start once you reach the age of 65. However, you'll want to start preparing for your transition to Medicare before your 65th birthday. Your Medicare options can be difficult to choose from, which is why it's essential to know your options before enrollment.

What Are My Medicare Options?

When you first enroll in Medicare, you’ll get to choose how you get your Medicare coverage. There are two primary ways to get Medicare – Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.

What is Original Medicare?

Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance). Medicare Part D can be added separately.

Additionally, you can also purchase Supplemental Coverage (Medigap) to help pay for your out-of-pocket costs not covered by Parts A and B.

What Does Medicare Cover?

Original Medicare covers most medically necessary services and supplies in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other health care settings. However, there are some benefits not covered under Original Medicare, like eye exams and routine exams.

Do I Have a Copay With Medicare?

Under Part B, you usually pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after your deductible is met.

Does Medicare Cover Dental?

Most dental care is not a covered benefit under the Original Medicare Program.

What is Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?

Medigap plans are standardized to follow federal and state laws designed to protect Florida residents. Medigap helps fill in the gaps in Original Medicare coverage by helping pay for out-of-pocket costs that aren’t covered by Medicare. Additionally, some Medigap policies offer coverage for medical care when traveling outside the United States, which Original Medicare does not cover.

Medigap plans are offered by many insurance companies. There are important company differences to be understood before making a choice. Wenrick Insurance Agency can explain the differences to make sure the choice made fits your needs.

You can learn more about Medigap on our Medicare Supplement's page.

What is the Difference Between Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D?

There are four parts between the Original Medicare Program and the Medicare Advantage Program.

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) helps cover but isn’t limited to

  • Inpatient Care in a Hospital
  • Inpatient Care in a Skilled Nursing Facility
  • Hospice Care
  • Home Health Care
  • and More

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) helps cover but isn’t limited to medically necessary

  • Doctor’s Services
  • Outpatient Care
  • Home Health Services
  • Durable Medical Equipment
  • Mental Health Services
  • and Other Medical Services

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plan) combines

  • Part A
  • Part B
  • and Usually Part D

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) helps pay for prescription drugs.

Each plan has its own unique features, making it imperative to learn about your options before choosing a plan.

What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?

Another way to get your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage is through a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C). These are plans offered by Medicare-approved insurance companies that must follow Medicare’s set rules. There are different types of Medicare Advantage Plans, including HMO and PPO plans. Medicare Advantage Plants cover almost all Medicare Part and Part B benefits.

Most Medicare Advantage Plans include Part D – Prescription Drug coverage.
